‘Barn Owl’ modelled by Gredington – the first version with split tail feathers.

Marketing initiatives were important. In December 1962 Beswick produced a small (2¼-inch) model of a giant panda (shape 1815) to support the British National Appeal of the World Wildlife Fund. For every model sold, Beswick made a donation to the fund. In 1964, to provide Australian interest on the stand at the Sydney Exhibition, a Merino ram (shape 1917) was modelled. This was based on the ram that was Grand Champion at the 1960 Sydney Show. Examples were sold with a special ‘swing’ label recording this detail, but it is unlikely that many of these will have survived. The model is rare as it was not produced after 1967.
